The skincare industry is perhaps the queen of using fad technology and buzz terms to attract consumers. Remember the leech facial? That hot minute when every mask, cream and serum was infused with 24kt gold? Snail slime? Truth be told consumers on a global scale are willing and open to some pretty wild beauty trends in the name of smooth and firmer skin.
The latest skin care craze to tackle the market? Weed cream. Well, cannabis and hemp oil infused skincare. This is not the compound that can get you ‘high’-that’s tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the other compound in marijuana-cannabidol (CBD) and is actually responsible for most of marijuana’s positive effects. CBD does not yield any psychotropic properties.
Quite fascinatingly, research on CBD has recognized its positive effects on inflammation, pain relief and the look and feel of the dermis (skin). Julie Winters, CEO of CBD for Life has stated its benefits to include extreme moisture, an improved skin barrier and an ability to reduce skin sensitivity and produce an over-all more plump, smooth appearance.
Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City has stated,
"It's important to recognize that hemp seed oil has been used for decades for its skin benefits, and while it comes from a plant related to marijuana, it does not contain high levels of the compound THC responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana,"
"There is lab data suggesting that cannabis seed oil is anti-inflammatory and may help decrease activity of oil glands, which may explain a benefit in acne.”
Evidently, CBD and hemp oils are rich in fomega-6atty acids which we know can be extremely moisturizing and helpful in filling in creases in the skin-making it appear more youthful and ‘plump’. Zeicher has stated that "Cannabis oil is rich in fatty acids, which fill in the cracks between skin cells like mortar between bricks. It also has moisturizing and skin soothing properties, which makes it useful in treating dry skin and rashes like eczema.”
Although no reviews we have read made claims that CBD oil does anything above and beyond other skin serums and oils, it is a refreshing and interesting new ‘natural’ addition to the skincare aisle. Elle magazine published a more in-depth article you can check out if you are interested in learing more about the weed cream trend.
